Mission: Impossible: The Beginning is a 2009 American espionage action spy film co-written and directed by Brian DePalma, who directed the first film, starring Brad Pitt in the role of IMF agent and Ethan Hunt's future mentor, Jim Phelps. It is the fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible Cinematic Universe and a prequel to the previous three films. It was produced by Tom Cruise, who starred as Ethan Hunt in the previous three films, and Paula Wagner and was released in the United States on May 16, 2009, and was a critical and commercial success.

Plot[]
During World War II, Dan Briggs, a veteran of the United States Army's G-2 (Intelligence) section, formed a wartime unit, unofficiallly known as "Briggs's Squad," that performed complex missions for the United States armed forces in which he was it's commanding officer. After the war, Briggs rounded up members of his former team and pulled them together to perform missions for the US Government. This new team became an independent covert-operations agency and was renamed the Impossible Missions Force.
For years, Briggs has lead the IMF into various missions during the Cold War, including Operation Rogosh. He recruited former U.S. Navy solider, James "Jim" Phelps, into the organization. In 1966, Briggs gets a message about a terrorist plot in Norway planning to send missiles to a rival country. Briggs sends Phelps along with IMF agents Barney Collier, Cinnamon Carter and Rollin Hand to stop the terrorists' plans by infiltrating the submarine pen where the missiles are being stored, then destroying the submarine holding the missiles.

A novel set prior to the events of the film, named "Mission: Impossible: Operation Rogosh", was released on May 18th, 2009. It was loosly based on an episode from the original Mission Impossible series, called "Operation Rogosh", where Dan Briggs and his IMF team have only 36 hours to trick a cunning mass murderer/foreign agent named Rogosh into telling them how he intends to kill thousands of people in the Los Angeles area. The novel portrays the mission diffrently than the episode.
